Egypt to host International Conference on the Role of NHRIs and NGOs in a Changing Environment
The Egyptian National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) will host an International conference on 1st and 2nd December,2008 at the Conrad Hotel in Cairo, Egypt. The Theme of the conference will be; The Role of National Human Rights Institutions and Non-Governmental Organizations in a Changing Environment.”The Conference is organized by NCHR together with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The objectives of the conference are : To revitalize the role of NHRIs and NGOs in Africa and in the Arab world, in addition to fostering exchange of experiences and consolidation of ties between African and Arab NHRIs and NGOs. The conference aims to stimulate a meaningful participation of NHRIs and NGOs in the process of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), in light of the experience of the first 16 countries reviewed during 2008 within the Human Rights Council of the UN. The conference will analyze lessons learned and promotion of best practices among NHRIs and NGOs. Further, the conference aims to set up a permanent “Forum of Dialogue”: “Cairo Conferences.
