Sub-regional Training Course for East African NHRI Commissioners
The countries that were at the training included Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Uganda. It took place in Mombasa, Kenya, from the 21st to the 25th of September. Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law organized the training in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, with the financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
The aim of the training course was to provide the participating Commissioners with both theoretical and practical knowledge of human rights and on how to fulfill their human rights mandates in the most efficient manner. Networking and the exchange of experience with the participants from neighbouring countries as well as with the resource persons was an important part of the expected outcome of the training course.
The lead facilitator was Prof. Brian Burdekin AO, former Federal Human Rights Commissioner of Australia. He was assisted by 2 other experienced (former) Chairpersons, Emile Short from Ghana and Margaret Sekaggya from Uganda.
