To support, through national, sub-regional, regional and international co-operation, the establishment, strengthening and development of national human rights institutions in order to enable them to more effectively undertake their mandate of human rights monitoring, promotion, protection and advocacy.
46th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and People's Rights
The 46th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and People's Rights is underway in Banjul, Gambia. It commenced on November 11, 2009 and will conclude on November 25, 2009.
The opening speech was delivered by the then Acting Chairperson of the African Commission Hon. Commissioner Bahame Tom Mukirya Nyanduga. The statement of the Network of Afrrican National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) was delivered by Commissioner Winfred Lichuma who spoke on behalf of all NHRIs in Africa.
Top on the agenda of the Session was the swearing in of new members of the African Commission, followed later on by review of the human rights situation in Africa, the cooperation with National Human Rights Institutions and Non- Governmental Organizations, and the coordination of State Reports. Presentation of Activity Reports of Special Mechanisms of the ACHPR will see key deliveries by amongst others, the Special Rapporteur on Prisons and Conditions of Detention in Africa, Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women, Special Rapporteur on Refugees, Asylum Seekers, Internally Displaced Persons and Migrants, Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders in Africa and Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa.
