The Steering Committee is the governing organ of the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions. The chairperson of the Steering Committee is also the Chairperson of the Network of ANHRIs.
Its responsibilities, which are outlined in article 34 of the Constitution of the Network, include the General control and management of the Secretariat, the appointment and supervision of the Executive Director and other Senior Staff of the Secretariat and any other functions assigned to it in the present constitution and by the general assembly.
It comprises of nine members four of whom are ex-officio and the remaining five are elected from amongst the full members of the Network.
Election of the Organs for the Network were held during the meeting of the General Assembly held on 3-5 November, 2009 in Rabat, Morocco. The newly elected members and their designated positions are as follows:-
The Chairperson of the Network – Conseil Consultatif des Droits de l’Homme
The Vice Chairperson of the Network (and the next host of the General Meeting) – South African Human Rights Commission
North Africa Region Representative– Egypt, The National Council of Human Rights
West Africa Region Representative– Togo , Commission Nationale des Droits de l'Homme
Eastern Africa Region Representative – Uganda Human Rights Commission
Southern Africa Region Representative– Malawi Human Rights Commission
The immediate former Chair of the Network – Commission Nationale des Droits de la Personne, Rwanda
The country hosting the Secretariat – Kenya National Commission on Human Rights
NB:
-Central Africa is not represented in the Steering Committee because it does not have a National Institution with A accreditation at the ICC
-Togo was endorsed to replaced Niger as the West Africa Region Representative at a meeting of ANHRIs on the sidelines of the 23rd Session of the ICC, 23-25 March 2010. This was necessitated by the dissolution of the latter after a coup d'etat on February 18, 2010 that saw the overthrow of then President Tanja's government.
