On the sidelines of the Fifth Ordinary Session of the Sixth Parliament in Midrand, the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI).
The MoU underscores a shared commitment to strengthening human rights, democracy, and good governance across the continent. Through this partnership, PAP and NANHRI will collaborate on:
Reviewing and reforming human rights legislation
Supporting the ratification of international treaties
Organizing joint training and awareness initiatives
Monitoring states’ compliance with regional and international obligations
Promoting policy dialogue, exchange of expertise, and coordinated advocacy
The significance of this agreement lies in the complementary roles of both institutions. NANHRI works to build the capacity of National Human Rights Institutions, while PAP focuses on harmonizing laws, enhancing accountability, and strengthening integration through African Parliamentarians.
This cooperation provides a more structured and impactful framework for parliaments and human rights institutions to align their efforts with the broader objectives of the African Union—fostering democratic principles, protecting human rights, and advancing continental unity.
