For the NHRIs to effectively contribute to the implementation of the Agenda 2030 of the SDGs and Agenda 2063 of the African Union as envisioned by the Kigali Declaration, NANHRI established the NANHRI Working Group on SDGs
In January 2015, the African Union adopted Agenda 2063 blueprint to guide sustainable development towards the Africa We Want. In September the same year, the United Nations adopted Agenda 2030 of the Sustainable Development with the clarion call of Leave No one Behind.
NANHRI recognised the importance of a human rights-based approach to the implementation of the two agendas. It is against this backdrop that NANHRI organised the 11th Biennial Conference in Kigali, Rwanda in November 2017, leading to the adoption of the Kigali Declaration and Action Plan of African NHRIs. For the NHRIs to effectively contribute to the implementation of the Agenda 2030 of the SDGs and Agenda 2063 of the African Union as envisioned by the Kigali Declaration, NANHRI established the NANHRI Working Group on SDGs.
Among other issues, the Working Group was tasked with ensuring sharing of experiences and good practices between and among the African NHRIs in monitoring and contributing to the implementation of the two agendas at national level.
Member of the Working Group on SDGs include the NHRIs of Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa and Cameroon. The Chairperson of the Working on SDGs is Commissioner Joseph Whittal of the NHRI of Ghana.
