Ms Kagwiria Mbogori is the Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.
She is an ex-officio member of the Steering Committee by virtue that the KNCHR hosts the Secretariat of the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions.
Ms Kagwiria is an accomplished Human Rights Practitioner. She has broad work experience at the national and regional level. At the helm of the KNCHR she provides strategic leadership for the implementation of the Commission’ s strategic plan of 2013-2018, that is focusing on the promotion of a culture of respect for human rights in Kenya. She has been providing authoritative policy direction in keeping with the mandate of National Human Rights Institution (NHRI).
Ms. Kagwiria holds a Masters of Law from the University of Notre Dame majoring in International and regional human rights protection systems, International Humanitarian Law and Transitional Justice. She is a Law Graduate from the University of Nairobi and hold a post graduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law.
Prior to joining KNCHR, she served at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as a Chief Technical Advisor, Judiciary of South Sudan where she was tasked with providing strategic policy direction for the Judiciary of South Sudan through resource mobilization, building strategic partnerships and supporting liaison in the justice sector of South Sudan.
Earlier, she served as Head of Advisory Unit, United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), Human Rights Officer (UNMIL), Country Programme Manager United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and Executive Director Kenya Section of the International Commission of Jurists. She has also consulted for various institutions on governance issues.
